Powered with Ashreen’s scintillating 96, Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors posted a massive total of 262 runs on the board, losing only three wickets in the process. On a mat wicket with the ball hardly doing anything both in terms of spin and swing, the clueless bowlers of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI were smashed to all sides of the park in the allotted 20 overs. Nihal (79), Nithish Raj (29), and skipper Daniel Sequiera (31) too joined the party, making sure that they keep Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI fielders chasing leather all the time. Nihal in particular took the attack to the men in red and smashed four consecutive sixes in one particular over towards the end of the innings.

In reply, Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI set off to a defensive start, going at a relatively low pace considering the total they had to chase. The batsmen failed to come to terms with the conditions and Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors’ bowling attack, and lost wickets at the top. The star of the event, Chris Cairns, then came out to bat and gave the crowd a lot to cheer about with some lusty hits either side of the wicket. After scoring a well made 69, Cairns got out, eliminating any hopes of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI winning the game. In all, Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI could only manage 179 in their allotted 20 overs for the loss of 6 wickets with contributions from Nathan Ashley (51) and Marc Archer (44), besides Cairns.

Ashreen was adjudged Man of the Match for his match winning knock of 96.

Sanjay Rao, Managing Director, Maruti Suzuki Mandovi, Mangalore, Dr Shrikanth Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association, Dr M R Shetty, Secretary and Executive Officer of Dr M V Shetty Memorial Trust, Arjun Pinto, President of Round Table, Muhammad Sharief, Administrative Manager of Coastaldigest.com and Joseph Rego, Head of the Chris Cairns Foundation, were present at the presentation ceremony.

Speaking after losing the match, Chris Cairns said that the Mangalore team played better than what they had expected. “Their standard of play was a lot better. We gave away too many runs. They were the better team”, Cairns said, congratulating the local team for the victory.

Winning captain Daniel Sequiera said that the event was a good opportunity to showcase their abilities and that they look to make the most of such opportunities whenever they get them. He also said that his team had not quite expected that they will win in such a fashion especially with a player of Cairns’ caliber in the opposition camp. “Until he (Cairns) was there at the crease, I was not quite sure. When he got out, I was content”, Sequeira said.

Man of the match Ashreen said that playing against cricketers of international stature, was a good experience for the local team.

Muhammad Sharief presented Marc Archer of Coastaldigest Chris Cairns XI with the Best Batsman award while Dr Shrikanth Rai and Arjun Pinto jointly presented the Best Bowler award to Daniel Sequiera of Dix Group DKCA Mangalore Warriors. Sanjay Rao gave away the Maruti Suzuki Chris Cairns T20 Cricket Trophy to the winning team.

The ball used in the game as well as the cricket kits used by Chris Cairns’ team were presented to DKCA on the occasion.

Prior to the match Chris Cairns gave some useful cricket tips to children at a short coaching session.

This information, coming close on the heels of the stepmotherly treatment of coastal Karnataka in last week's railway budget, sounds hard to believe.

If Mangalore's MP Nalin Kumar Kateel's communication is to be believed, a written reply has been received by him to his query in Lok Sabha.

A sum Rs 80.60 crore will be utilized for the purpose and the work has already begun, the ministry has informed our elected representative.

As part of upgradation and modernization, extensive lighting, a new booking office, coach information facility, automated systems will be the additions in the central railway station.

The ministry has also informed Kateel that all these works would be completed by March 2012.

A functionary of a business body responded to our correspondent's query by saying that this information might have been provided by the ministry much before the budget presentation and the timing was chosen to release it only to take care of the resentment over the lack of extra benefits to the region.

Ms. Dugganna will step down as Mayor on Monday as elections to the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on that day.

She said that the civic body had invited bids for replacing sodium street lamps with CFL lamps. The corporation had disconnected power supply to some borewells that were not in use. It had initiated steps to replace the old pumpsets at water supply stations with new ones. This would also help in saving energy. The Mayor said that of the Rs. 27.58-crore property tax estimated under the self-assessment scheme (SAS) for 2010-11, the civic body had collected Rs. 23.26 crores till January. K. Sudhir Shetty, outgoing chairperson of the Standing Committee on Town Planning and Improvement, said that 39 km of roads in the jurisdiction of the corporation had been concreted with the financial grant from the State Finance Commission and Rs. 100 crore special grant from the State Government announced in 2008-09 budget in two instalments of Rs. 50 crore each for 2008-09 and 2009-10.

He said of the Rs. 100 crore, the Government had released Rs. 86 crore to the civic body and Rs. 77.16 crore had been paid towards various works, including the roadworks.

Mr. Shetty said that under Rs. 100-crore additional grant (second instalment) promised to the civic body, Rs. 25 lakh would be given to each ward for asphalting roads.

Mr. Shetty said that the corporation had planned to introduce smartcards for issuing water bills. It would be first introduced for commercial and apartment connections. The civic body would have to replace the water meters at its own cost before introducing smartcard-based water billing. Under the proposed billing method, whoever took water connection would get a message on their cellphone when the bill collector swiped the card. The civic body had invited bids for this. Rajendra, outgoing Deputy Mayor, Shantha R, outgoing chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Health, Education and Social Justice, and Roopa D. Bangera, outgoing chairperson of the Committee on Taxation, Finance and Appeals were present.

The airport, which handles five international and 12 domestic flights a day, was declared a “custom airport for limited international operations” in 2006.

The business community hopes that it will soon be declared a full-fledged international airport and the cargo movement will begin from here soon. The Saturday''s opening of the new terminal, it is hoped, will add force to the demands.

The business community hopes that more domestic and international carriers will start operating from the airport, considering the steady growth it has witnessed in recent years.
The sharp increase in the air passenger traffic — up from 2.4 lakh in 2005-06 to over 6.5 lakh in 2009-10 — is expected to increase further and generate more revenue to business establishments, including the catering sector, here.

The Bangalore-based MRG Group, which runs the Gold Finch Hotel here, has planned to establish a larger hotel at Kuloor, which is midway between the city and the airport. The “new facility will certainly bring in more guests to Mangalore”, said Prasad Kumar Shetty, who is in charge of the Gold Finch. The group is also setting up smaller hotels as part of a township proposed on a 50-acre plot at Kulai in partnership with K. Raheja Builders.

President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry Srinivas S. Kamath said it was only a matter of time before the Mangalore airport was declared an international airport. Passenger movement would sharply increase and bring in more business for many in the region. Medical tourism would get a fillip, he said.

Besides, the launch of cargo services from the airport would lead to export of flowers and vegetables to West Asian and other countries, Mr. Kamath said.

Assistant Director of Marine Product Export Development Authority (MPEDA) Rajkumar S. Naik told The Hindu that the ornamental fish breeders had been enquiring about the facilities available in Mangalore for export by air. The MPEDA has already targeted export of live fish worth Rs. 1.5 crore this year, he said. Mr. Naik, who was in Kochi on Friday, said he had brought this matter to the notice of the top officials of the authority.

There is a huge demand for fresh fish from Mangaloreans settled in West Asia. “We get good quality fresh fish here and at Karwar. They can be packed in thermocol boxes with ice and exported directly. Initially, there would be exports worth Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 2 crore (of such fish),” he said. Chilled fish producers might also be interested in exports, he added.
The new integrated terminal, to be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation (independent charge) Praful Patel, will have two aero bridges, seven escalators, as many lifts, three arrival baggage conveyors, one departure baggage conveyor, 20 check-in counters and parking space for 300 cars and 10 buses.

The services, presently being offered from the terminal building at Bajpe, are expected to be fully shifted to the new terminal building in 10 days'' time. The Kenjar terminal will reduce the distance to the airport from city by about 7 km.

The 47,000-sq. m apron (parking space for aircraft) will accommodate five aircraft at a time, and there is scope to expand it to accommodate three more.

The integrated international terminal as it is called, is situated next to the old upgraded terminal. It has modern amenities and facilities like aerobridges which will facilitate the passengers to walk out of the aircraft directly into the airport arrival lounge without have to bear the heat of the tarmac between the aircraft and the arrival lounge. The baggage clearance area has been made more spacious and the movement of the baggage on the conveyor belt faster.

On the departure side, the AAI has made even better passenger amenities like international standard cafeteria, upgraded waiting lobbies with wi-fi hotspots, banking facilities, elevators and other facilities. Public address system has been further clarified which enhances the clarity of the announcer’s voice.

But will there be more airlines starting their services from Mangalore to different destinations around the globe? When asked, the AAI authorities said presently the Kingfisher, Jet, Air India Express and Air India Regional were operating domestic and international routes like Abu Dabhi, Baharain, Doha, Kuwait, Dubai and Muscat. The city is also connected to the US, UK, Australia and other countries via Bangalore International Airport at Devanahalli, which was enough to make the Mangalore International Airport the second best connected airport after Bangalore in Karnataka state.

The Airport today has traffic of 32 flights landing and taking off every day and has nearly 2500 passengers arriving and departing.

According to the General Manager of the Mangalore International Airport, Mr. Peter Abraham, every operation of the Airport has been made compatible with the international standards. Mangalore airport has been prepared to take up technology integration at any point of time in the future and even in the present context it was one of the best technology integrated airport, he added.

The travel time to the new terminal from Mangalore city, when fully operational, will be 8 kilometers lesser than the old terminal at Bajpe. This was due to the fact that the new terminal was situated in Kanjar and was directly accessible from the state highway. In addition, a new Zilla Panchayat road has been constructed to the distance of 1.7 kilometers to join the Dakkan park road which will make the new terminal even more closer.

Speaking to Mangalorean.com, MP of Mangalore, Mr. Nalin Kumar Kateel, said that the terminal was ready for inauguration and would be soon inaugurated though it was not definite who would inaugurate it. "I agree that it should be the chief executive of the elected government. I have told the AAI authorities that the passengers coming and going from this airport this holiday season should get the benefit of the new international terminal. Though major structural works are over, there are many more to be completed including interiors, false roofing, ducting and sound proofing. According to my sources these things could be completed within a month or two. I want the passengers arriving for new festive season this year to arrive in the new terminal," Kateel said.

He also added that Mangalore which is now on the world map of development would get more flights from different parts of the globe. "The airport parking bay can now hold upto five aircrafts at a time and the expansion work is going on for accommodating two more flights," he said.

"The new terminal building is ready in all respects, we have completed all works and allotted slots to each of the airlines, concessionaires and most of them are now busy setting up their offices and making minute adjustments according to their company requirements" says Mr. Abraham.

"The beauty of this new terminal is that it is comparable to any international airport either in Mumbai or Delhi. Though it is scaled down in size and operations due to traffic, passengers will get the same type of service and facilities what they get in big cities elsewhere" he said adding that "Aerobridges, elevators, escalators, easier exit and entry into airport from the car park area have been as scientifically designed on the lines of its metro cousins."

Mr Abraham said the new terminal at Bajpe was one among the 35 other tier II city airport expansions all over the country, but each airport was different in design, but there is a brand equity in service and facilities he added.

He said "though there are only two aerobridges right now provision has been made to install more if needed at the new terminal. Mangalore airport has an advantage of having five aircraft bays at the new terminal and five more at the existing terminal. Even when the arrival and departure operations are fully shifted to the new terminal the old terminal building will be kept ready for taking up arrival and departure operations at short notice," he said.

According to the sources in the civil aviation ministry "there was nothing to stop Mangalore airport from getting the international tag as it now has the customs coverage. There are enquiries from various airlines plying on both domestic and international routes to operate from Mangalore, since international airports in Bangalore and Kochi are far away from the coastal area of Karnataka. Mangalore will see a spurt in international traffic once the new terminal at Mangalore was declared open," Mr Abraham said.

The academy functions under the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

He told presspersons that the academy was planning to set up its office in the stadium and impart cricket coaching.

Mr. Kirmani said that he met Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj on Wednesday and placed the demand for the land.

He said that the academy, set up five years ago, had remained non-functional so far. The academy was revived a month ago and it would take up activities aimed at promoting cricket, mainly coaching, in the six zones of the association.

Asked why the academy had remained non-functional all these years, he said: “I don’t know the reasons for it.”

The former India wicket-keeper said that under-14 cricket coaching camp had begun simultaneously in the six zones of the association, including Mangalore, on Tuesday. Coaching camps would be held for players of other age groups from the next season. The academy would train promising cricketers from each zone at an advanced camp to be held in Bangalore soon, Mr. Kirmani said.

Karthik Jeswanth, one of the chief coaches of the academy, said that the academy had been revived for ensuring uniformity in cricket coaching in the State. It would also organise training programmes for coaches, with assistance from the National Cricket Academy and prominent cricketers in Bangalore, he said.

Manohar Amin, convener of the Mangalore zone of the association, said that selection camps for under-14 players were held at Madikeri, Udupi and Kundapur this year.

Addressing a press conference after inspecting various developmental works in the City Corporation limits on Wednesday, he said parking has proved a serious problem in Mangalore since the space meant of parking has been misused by the commercial complexes.

“About 30 per cent of space on the roads is being used for vehicle parking since the commercial complexes have not allotted necessary parking lots. One multi-level parking complex has already been approved for Hampankatta,” he said.
The operation was conducted near the scrap market, also known as Chor Bazar.

The MCC staff removed loads of scrap items, doors of cars, and other spare parts of automobiles on a lorry. The traders had occupied much part of the road and left them on the public property overnight. A jeep and a scooter, with most of their parts yet to be dismantled, were loaded on to a truck using a crane and taken away. A few merchants were seen removing the goods placed on the road in order to save them from being taken away the MCC staff.

The drive which started about 7.30 am took the scrap merchants by surprise. In fact, there was some drama for a brief while when the MCC staff started removing several articles placed in the front of the shop of Abdul Hamad. He arrived on the scene and spoke to policemen and officials in a raised voice. He sought five minutes time to remove the article but this was not granted. A couple of automobile engines were loaded on an MCC truck, even as he was protesting. A fuming Mr. Hamad, who claimed to be the President of the Scrap and Iron Merchants Association, said he has not been served with a notice.

MCC Revenue Officer Meghana R. told him that the Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj and MCC Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash had already visited the area and asked the merchants not to encroach road. Mr. Hamad shouted at her saying that no notice has been served to the merchants before carrying out the drive. At one point of time, Mr. Hamad’s supporters climbed on to the truck to get back the articles already loaded into it. Policemen intervened and had them climb down. Mr. Hamad attempted to block its movement and had to be taken aside by the police.

A policeman present on the spot pointed out that the recent visit by the DC and MCC Commissioner has had a salutary effect on the road.
Krishna Palemar on Tuesday directed Forest Department officials here not to object unnecessarily to cutting of trees for widening roads in the Mangalore City Corporation limits.

Presiding over a progress review meeting here, he said that cutting of some trees was inevitable for widening of roads and other development works. It was not right on the part of the officials to object to it.

“You first focus on preventing unauthorised felling of trees in forests,” the Minister told the officials, represented by Vijayakumar Shetty, Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF), Dakshina Kannada.

Mr. Palemar said that in some places road alignment could not be changed for the sake of a few trees. Mayor M. Shankar Bhat said that the Forest Department had neither rejected nor approved the demand of the city corporation to cut some trees near Pandeshwar and on the stretch between Kankanady and Morgan’s Gate. V. Ponnuraj, Deputy Commissioner, said that only four trees would have to be cut between Kankanady and Morgan’s Gate. The corporation was trying to save trees wherever possible. The Minister directed the DCF to give clearance for cutting trees on roads where work had been affected, in a week’s time. Mr. Ponnuraj said that the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board would take up a survey to assess the extent of land that would be submerged by the time the new vented dam at Thumbe was completed. It would be completed in a month’s time.

In an unusual incident, the Deputy Commissioner sent the Executive Officer of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat Kantaraj out of the meeting for not providing proper information about the availability and distribution of land for the poor. Mr. Ponnuraj asked the official to go to his office at Hampankatta from Kottara, the venue of meeting, and return with proper information.

Mr. Kantaraj was told that a show-cause notice would be served on him if the information furnished by him was wrong.

Councillors alleged that the corporation’s town planning officer had recalled some building licences issued recently stating that the applicants would have to submit fresh building plans in accordance with the provisions of the new master plan. Those applicants had submitted their building plans much ahead of October 1, the councillors said. They alleged that the applicants were being harassed by the town planning section. The members said that the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA), which had prepared the master plan, had not revealed the details of the plan to the people.

In such circumstances, how could the corporation expect people to re-draft the building plans? They wanted to know what prevented the town planning section from approving the plans filed before October 1. The town planning officer was withholding some applications, members said.

Master plan

K.N. Vijayaprakash, Commissioner of the corporation, said that since the master plan had come into effect, certain issues would have to be addressed afresh. These issues would be discussed with the Chairman and Commissioner of MUDA and the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada shortly. A decision would be taken within a week, he said.

Property tax

Mayor, M. Shankar Bhat, said that the Government had not yet approved the property tax rates revised by the council under the self-assessment scheme. The Government had sought some clarifications from the Deputy Commissioner, he said. M. Shashidhar Hegde, former Mayor, said that the civic body had not yet released the Rs. 15-lakh fund that was meant to be spent by each councillor in their wards. As a result, development works had come to halt, he said.

Directives

The Mayor said that all junior engineers had been asked to submit proposals for the developmental projects to be taken up in each ward. The Commissioner had issued orders that potholes on the roads be filled at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 lakh in each ward.

Special meeting

The Mayor said that a special meeting would be convened before November 10 to discuss the progress of various projects taken up by the administration with the Asian Development Bank loan in the city.
As part of the proposed drive, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj conducted a survey of the congested Car Street and Central Market areas on Friday.

Accompanied by Revenue and Public Works Department officials, Mr. Ponnuraj took measurements of the roads in these areas and identified properties that would have to be acquired and later demolished for road widening.

Speaking to The Hindu after the survey, Mr. Ponnuraj said that in the city’s old business district there was considerable congestion on the stretch passing through Durga Mall, Car Street, Central Market and Hampankatta. This stretch would be cleared of all major obstructions soon, he said.

The plan was to provide for smooth flow of traffic along the corridor connecting Kottara Chowki, Lady Hill, PVS Junction, Jyothi Circle and Hampankatta Junction and the Central Market area. The first bottleneck in this fast-moving traffic corridor, he said, was at PVS Junction. However, the properties that were blocking the smooth flow of traffic here had been identified for acquisition. Widening had already started on land that belonged to the Deepa Comforts Hotel there, he said.

The Hampankatta Junction was still an eye-sore for the authorities and moves were on to make the approach to the city’s longest traffic signal smoother.

The road leading to Hampankatta from the Milagres Church side would be widened to three lanes by acquiring land from the church, the Canara Jewellers and some Moolageni tenants living on the stretch. “Negotiations are on with the tenants whereas the church and the jewellers have agreed to our plans in principle,” Mr. Ponnuraj said and added that enough land would be acquired there to provide 8- to 10-ft wide footpaths.

Owners of Jyothi Cinema had agreed to facilitate the widening of the road leading to the Jyothi Junction from the Lighthouse Hill, he said. The interim report of the Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Plan had been received by the district administration and many of the changes that were proposed would be inspired by the recommendations of the interim and the final reports, he said.
(BSNL) will offer 3G mobile phone service in Mangalore by January-end, if everything goes as planned. The company had announced in February that 3G services would be available in Mangalore, Manipal and Udupi by the year-end.

Subscribers opting for this service and possessing a 3G handset will get high-speed Internet on their mobiles and will be able to see callers. It will also facilitate video-conferencing. Video-gaming will be another option available.

Y.C. Mishra, Principal General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, told that the 3G service would be offered in Mangalore and select suburbs to begin with by January-end and extended later to Manipal and Udupi.

Mishra said that BSNL was aiming at providing 40,000 3G lines. The cost of providing this service would be about Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 8,000 a line. The subscriber’s cost for availing the service would be announced later.

Customers would have to change their SIM cards to avail the service once it was launched; he said and added that BSNL was offering broadband services in all its exchanges in the telecom district.

Coverage

On the complaints from consumers regarding poor coverage, Mishra said the network would improve by December and vastly change by March 2010. As of now, BSNL had activated about 280 towers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Plans

In November and December, about 80 more towers would be commissioned and another 100 would start functioning by March 2010, he said.
