Mangalore: Rs 80-crore Master Plan for Central Railway Station!

28 February 2011

It is reliably learnt that the ministry of railways has approved a master plan costing Rs 80 crore for the modernization of city's central railway station here.

This information, coming close on the heels of the stepmotherly treatment of coastal Karnataka in last week's railway budget, sounds hard to believe.

If Mangalore's MP Nalin Kumar Kateel's communication is to be believed, a written reply has been received by him to his query in Lok Sabha.

A sum Rs 80.60 crore will be utilized for the purpose and the work has already begun, the ministry has informed our elected representative.

As part of upgradation and modernization, extensive lighting, a new booking office, coach information facility, automated systems will be the additions in the central railway station.

The ministry has also informed Kateel that all these works would be completed by March 2012.

A functionary of a business body responded to our correspondent's query by saying that this information might have been provided by the ministry much before the budget presentation and the timing was chosen to release it only to take care of the resentment over the lack of extra benefits to the region.
