Poovamma among three Mangaloreans to bag Ekalavya Award

Three sportspersons from Mangalore, including R Poovamma, have been selected for Karnataka Government’s Ekalavya Awards for the years 2007 and 2008.

The sportspersons are Nayana Shriyan - power lifting (Mangalore), R Poovamma - athletics (Mangalore), Uday Chowta - kabbadi (Mangalore).

M.R. Poovamma, the long-limbed Dakshin Kanara girl, participated in the Olympic games held last year and won several medals at the national and international events.

This was announced by Minister for Sports and Youth Services Gulihatti D Shekhar here on Wednesday. The Government has selected a total of 30 sportspersons for the award for 2007 and 2008.

On the lines of Rajiv Khel Ratna at the Centre, the Government has decided to institute a Karnataka Krida Ratna Award and it would be given to best sportsperson of the year from the next year onwards, he said.

Mr Shekhar said that 15 sportspersons each have been selected for the years 2007 and 2008. The awards would be presented to sportspersons at a function at Rajbhavan on December 17 or 21. No cricketer has been selected for the award in 2007 and 2008.

Each selected sportspersons would be given cash award of Rs. 50,000, a bronze statue of Ekalavya, a certificate, and a set of clothes. The cash prize would be increased to Rs one lakh from the next year (2010).
