City girl to represent karnataka for national chess event

The city chess talent, Vanessa D’Souza, has secured the place of runner-up in the State Women’s Chess Championship 2009 held in Bangalore from August 28 to 30. Vanessa, who belongs to the city’s Deric Chess School (DCS), scored four points in five rounds with 13 tiebreak points, which placed her in second position ahead of Rekha Sagar and defending champion Manasa K.

Administrator, DCS, Deric Pinto, said Rekha and Manasa had to be content with securing the third and fourth places respectively. K. Shruthi of Shimoga bagged the title. Another DCS prodigy, Andrea D’Souza, secured the fifth position and narrowly missed the national berth, he said in a statement. Vanessa will represent Karnataka in the forthcoming National Challengers Women’s Championship to be held in Nagpur from September 7 to 15.

Vanessa is studying in standard 9 at St. Agnes High School, Mangalore.
