The city chess talent, Vanessa D’Souza, has secured the place of runner-up in the State Women’s Chess Championship 2009 held in Bangalore from August 28 to 30. Vanessa, who belongs to the city’s Deric Chess School (DCS), scored four points in five rounds with 13 tiebreak points, which placed her in second position ahead of Rekha Sagar and defending champion Manasa K.
Administrator, DCS, Deric Pinto, said Rekha and Manasa had to be content with securing the third and fourth places respectively. K. Shruthi of Shimoga bagged the title. Another DCS prodigy, Andrea D’Souza, secured the fifth position and narrowly missed the national berth, he said in a statement. Vanessa will represent Karnataka in the forthcoming National Challengers Women’s Championship to be held in Nagpur from September 7 to 15.
Vanessa is studying in standard 9 at St. Agnes High School, Mangalore.

"Stop dreaming of a day train and start your journey on a day train" this was the message given by Mr. Veerappa Moily Union minister for Law and Justice here today while inaugurating the new day train to Bangalore from Mangalore.
The last remaining link to tap and boost tourism potential of the coastal region will be complete when the Mangalore-Yesvantpur 6515/ 6516 tri-weekly train commences on Saturday.
Hitherto, the coastal tourism circuit has not been in the scheme of things of the Department of Tourism and its favourite destinations have been North Karnataka and Mysore circuits.
The traffic study for Mangalore-Hassan railway track, done by management consultancy firm A F Ferguson & Company, for Hassan-Mangalore Railway Development Company (HMRDC) in the year 2003, points to this aspect.
The passenger profile in the survey puts the tourists at a measly 6% with family and officials category hogging numbers at 90%, who prefer to travel by the night train, with 4% being miscellaneous type.
The survey indicated that passengers favoured a shift to train travel due to comfort factor, cost effectiveness and picturesque ghats enroute. The survey noted that about 40% of the projected demand (two-way traffic) of three million (in 2001-02) would shift to rail (night) in the first couple of years and then it would go up to 80%. Incidentally, the night passenger train commenced operations only in December 2007.
Quoting the survey, a HMRDC railway official said that running a tri-weekly would make better sense than having it daily. "If the demand is more then it can be made daily, otherwise it would be revenue drainer", the source added.
Niren Jain, convener, Kudremukh Wildlife Foundation, says that this train should enable either the tourism department or private operators to make coastal circuit a popular destination. He said, operators can plan one to three day circuits covering general, religious as well as beach tourism in the regions like Kukke Subrahmanya, Dharmasthala, Moodbidre and beaches.
He says the train will prove to be a trekkers delight as one can get down at Subrahmaya Road station, have a trek towards Yedakumeri and return the next day by the tri-weekly train from Sakleshpur.
South Western Railway deputy general manager Prem Narayan said, there are no scheduled stops at Yedakumeri or Donigal stations, unless due to technical reasons or crossings. So trekkers will have to start their trek either from Sakleshpur or Subrahmanya Road station, he added.

The new terminal at the Bajpe airport here, housing both international as well as domestic terminals, is likely to be inaugurated by Civil Aviation minister Prafful Patel on September 15.
But, the new facility, built at a cost of Rs 147 crore, will be opened for both domestic and international traffic only in October as various systems like customs, immigration, terminal management, will not be operational at the time of the inauguration.
Airport director Chandran told TOI, "The September 15 deadline was tentative, but they were working towards that date. Sources said the date has not been officially confirmed by the Airport Authority of India, New Delhi or the Union Civil Aviation Ministry, but the date doing rounds as the Mysore Airport was also scheduled to be inaugurated on that day itself. The date was mentioned by Patel when chief minister B S Yeddyurappa met him at New Delhi recently.
The Mysore airport is awaiting clearance from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). "Once that comes through, it is certain that both the functions would be held on the same day for convenience sake, the source added.
On the same day of the inauguration, laying of the foundation stone for the Air Traffic Services (ATS) Complex will also be laid at the Bajpe Customs airport. This complex, for which in principle approval has been given, is still on the drawing board stage.
As far as the new terminal is concerned, the new terminal, which will have two aerobridges, is four times larger than the existing terminal at Bajpe. While the old terminal is 4,000 sq mt, the new terminal is 18,200 sq mt. There is space to park 300 cars at the new terminal.
The new terminal can handle more than a thousand international and domestic arrivals / departures at any given point of time, as opposed to the old terminal which is constrained to handle the existing load of about 600 passengers.
Also, the new road to Kenjaru terminal, which will reduce the distance by over eight km is also complete. The link road is state government's infrastructure dole to the airport expansion project. The road project, estimated at Rs 8.89 crore, included strengthening of the existing PWD road of 1.125 km and constructing new road of 900 metre length from Kenjar village junction to new Bajpe airport terminus.

Passengers can book their journey by the day-train to Bangalore from Friday afternoon.
An official of the South Western Railway said that since the notification regarding the train arrived only on Thursday afternoon, people were working hard to start reservation from Friday. “By lunch time, they will start issuing tickets. We will try to start it early,” he said.
The inaugural special train will leave Mangalore at 8.40 a.m. and reach Yeshwanthpur at 7 p.m. covering the 396-km distance. The regular train service will commence from September 1. The train will run on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Yeshwanthpur in Bangalore and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from Mangalore.
It will stop at Mangalore Junction, Bantwal, Kabakaputtur, Subrahmanya Road, Sakleshpur, Hassan, Arsikere, Tiptur, and Tumkur.
The train will have one three-tier AC coach, nine chair cars, two second class general sitting-cum-guard vans.

A dream of day train between Mangalore and Bangalore will be fulfilled within countable days. As a result of protest which was conducted on 25th August by various unions under the leadership of Canara Commerce and Industrial Organisation, Mangalore-Bangalore day train will be started on 29th August, told KCCI Treasurer M Ahmed Bava.
This dream became reality as a result of the discussion held between the railway minister and concerned officers. Initially train facility will be commenced for every 2 days and later it is expected on daily basis. The decision of the government is welcomed, he added.

A 14-year-old girl fell from the fourth floor of a building at Sturrock Road on Wednesday night, prompting the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to direct the police to probe into the incident. The CWC suspects it to be a case of child labour or flouting of rules of Justice Juvenile Act.
The girl, Ayesha from Sirsi, dislocated her pelvic bone and suffered bruises after the fall.
The CWC who came to know of the incident visited the hospital where she was undergoing treatment. Geo D'Silva, a member of the committee, said the girl looks about 14 years. "JJ Act gives us the powers to medically examine her and assess the age of the victim," he told TOI.
Abdul Salam, at whose apartment the girl was staying, denied that she was working as a maid. "Her mother (Shaheen), who was working as a maid at my house in Kerala, brought Ayesha along with her when I shifted to the apartment here as she did not want her daughter to get chikungunya, rampant in her village," he said. Salam said the woman went back to Sirsi, but did not come back within two days as promised. Salam, claiming the girl was 17 years old, said he had locked his apartment, leaving the girl and his two children in the house, to visit his nephew admitted at a hospital here.
D'Silva said even if she was 17 years, the JJ Act says no person below 18 years can be employed without the CWC's notice. The CWC will look into the fact whether she was paid minimum wages. D'Silva said in case the girl is below 14 years, the labour department officials will be notified.
Ayesha, who is recuperating in a hospital, said she was 15 years old and she came to Salaam's house eight days ago. Recalling the incident, she said the inmates of the house had gone out, locking the house leaving her behind with the two children. "I was sitting on the balcony railing and suddenly I felt dizzy and fell down," she said. Ayesha also said that she was treated decently by the family. Salaam's neighbour, Shafeeq, said he heard a thud sound and saw the girl fall flat on the ground. They rushed her to the hospital immediately.
But CWC suspects that the maid may have tried to escape from the balcony as she was allegedly mistreated. The CWC has summoned her parents from Sirsi, and asked them to get her birth certificate.

Minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, on Wednesday confirmed that the tri-weekly day passenger train service between Mangalore and Bangalore would commence operation from Saturday.
I will flag off the train from Mangalore Central Railway station at 8 am, Muniyappa told TOI. Yes, there was confusion about the start as the railway minister was unavailable. It has been sorted out now, he said.
Padmanabhan, additional private secretary to railway minister Mamata Banerjee, said she had cleared it. She came to Delhi late and gave the approval on Wednesday evening. We will not be in a position to convey it to the authorities concerned. An official release will be issued on Thursday morning, he added.
But confusion prevailed at the ground level here with Palghat officials saying that the Southern Railway (Chennai) chief PROs office had stated that the function on Saturday was cancelled and the train would start in the first week of September.
Sources in New Delhi said it was just a procedural formality for the railway minister to give the go-ahead . As she was away, the file was pending approval, the source added.
Even South Western Railway officials said they had not received any instructions till late on Wednesday evening.
We would be too happy to announce the commencement of the day train as it has been a long-pending demand of the people of Mangalore. The only hitch is that we have not got any confirmation, SWR deputy GM Prem Narayan said.

Continues heavy rain reported at different parts of South Canara District on Monday night and Tuesday morning. On Tuesday morning, a branch of a tree fell on the house of Harish in Vitla and the house was partially damaged. Rain occurred in the city areas of Mangalore, Surathkal, Mulki, Kinnigoli, Bajpe, Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia, Belthangady, Moodubidri and in other areas. It was just drizzling in Puttur. Two fishing boats collided with each other at 20 kms distance from Uchila beach of Someshwar in which one fishing boat (troll boat) sunk and 6 persons were rescued from the danger.
The sunken fishing boat “Ganesh Prabha-1” belongs to Ganesh Krupa Enterprises. The accident occurred after collision with another boat “Habathulla”.
Ganesh Prabha -1 was fishing at 20 kms distance around dawn 4.00 a.m from the shore, another boat Hibatulla which was fishing in the same region collided with the latter boat.The fishermen in the drowning boat was rescued by another crew of “Maha Ganesh” boat which was fishing in the nearby region.
The major parts of the Ganesh Prabha-1 boat were severely damaged. The loss was estimated to be about 30 lakhs. Attempts are being made for the salvage of the sunken ship.
Complaint has been registered in Port and Fisheries Department, Police Station and Troll Boat Fishermen’s’ Association.

The Mangalore City Corporation began preliminary work to upgrade the stretch between Father Muller Hospital and Morgans’ Gate to a two-lane concrete road.
At an estimated cost of Rs. 5 crore, concrete would be laid on the 2.5 km stretch which passes through Valencia and Marnamikatta. The Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district, J. Krishna Palemar, inaugurated the project near the hospital on Tuesday.
Speaking to The Hindu on the occasion, Mayor M. Shankar Bhat said that the two-lane road will be 7.5 metre in width. The civic body chose not make it a four-lane road to save huge trees in Valencia area.
According to Ganeshan, Assistant Executive Engineer of the corporation, a private contractor who will be awarded the work will have to complete the road in six months from Tuesday.

The Minister also laid the foundation stone for construction of a market complex at Bejai on Tuesday. Karnataka Land Army Corporation Limited (KLACL), a State Government undertaking, will build it at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore.
The Mayor said that the complex will have a basement, lower ground floor, upper ground floor (mezzanine floor), first, second and third floors. In the first phase, the KLACL will construct only the basement and lower ground floor within one year. The civic body will release Rs. 1 crore for the purpose. Other floors will be constructed later in a phased manner.
Mr. Bhat said that the basement will have 8,000 sq. ft. floor area. It will be used for parking of vehicles. The lower ground floor will have provision for 12 shops, five vegetable stalls, three fruit stalls and two flower stalls.

One of the long-cherished dreams of the citizens of the district will be realized on August 29, when the day-train services between the city and Bangalore will be flagged off from the local railway station by union minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, at 8.45 am. However, the expectant railway passengers have a small disappointment too, as the train would be run thrice a week instead of the daily services demanded by them and it will start from here and Yashwantpur station in Bangalore, on alternative mornings.

A merchant was stabbed near the Central Market in the city, just opposite the police outpost near Kalpana Sweets stall, on the night of Friday August 21, by four unidentified persons. Ibrahim (30), who was seriously injured in the incident, is being treated in the intensive care unit of a private hospital here.
The incident occurred in the heart of the city, even when the ban order imposed by the district administration is in force and the police personnel have been keeping a tight vigil. Ibrahim, who runs a vegetable shop opposite Roopavani Talkies near the spot where the incident took place, was going home at about 8.30 pm on his motor bike, when four strangers stopped him near Kalpana Sweets and escaped after stabbing his back with sharp weapons. The motor bike of Ibrahim was found lying at the spot of the incident, and the Bunder station policemen have taken it to the police station.
As the district administration has asked all business establishments in the city to be closed by 8 pm, Ibrahim closed his shop early and was going home. The accused reportedly ran towards Bibi Alabi Road after stabbing Ibrahim.
It is said, an attempt to assault an auto rickshaw driver took place late night on Friday, near the Central Railway Station here. It is said, the alert driver succeeded in anticipating the attack and escaping unhurt.

‘Mangalore United’ team for Karnataka Premier League has commenced a three-day reality show of cricket matches, started today on August 21 at NITK grounds in Surathkal. The show was inaugurated by Mohidin Bawa, the owner of the team along with Charu Sharma, popular television cricket commentator.
This reality show is organized to test the talents of the selected 45 players, who have been divided into four teams. The teams have been playing against one another, to expose their capability and potential, with the hope that they would be selected for the Mangalore United team so that they can play in KPL matches. Charu Sharma will be the in-charge of selection process.
The selection round, which has been christened as the ‘reality show’, will continue for three days till august 23. After the matches best 14 players will be selected for the final round, which will be held on August 30. These 14 players will play a final match with the Mangalore United KPL team, which has been chosen through the bidding process. Finally, out of these 14, three local players will be selected for the Mangalore United team.

An expert on sports facilities has advised the District Stadium Committee here against reinforcing the track at the Mangala Stadium with cinder or sand-mixed soil.
International Technical Official of the Athletics Federation of India Rajuvelu visited the stadium on Friday to inspect the track and suggest measures to improve the track as requested by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports. The Stadium Committee, headed by Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj, had decided in one of its recent meetings earlier to reinforce the track with cinder or sand-mixed soil.
Mr. Rajuvelu, also a qualified coach, said temporary patchwork and levelling of the track was enough as the Government was planning to provide the stadium with modern synthetic track.
He told The Hindu at the stadium on Friday that the Stadium Committee may think of reinforcing the track with cinder or soil only if the Government’s plans to provide the stadium with modern synthetic track are delayed. Otherwise it would be a wasteful expenditure, he added.
If the Committee found it fit to reinforce the track, it may provide a layer of sand-mixed soil but not with cinder. He added that cinder was not easily available. Mr. Rajuvelu agreed that much of the cinder has vanished from the track because of rains in monsoon and in the form of dust during other seasons. Stating that cinder tracks are no longer recommended by sports technicians, he said a layer sand-mixed soil would be advisable only if laying of the synthetic track would take time. The sandy soil top could provide smooth surface for the athletes. The stadium officials could grow grass to enhance the comfort level for athletes.
Mr. Rajuvelu pointed out that majority of top ranking athletes in the State were from Mangalore and surrounding areas and hence it was important to provide them with good facilities.
Assistant Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, M.C. Ramesh, Vice-President of Karnataka Athletics Association, Sunil Shetty, Senior Athetic Coach of Sports Authority of Karnataka, Anantharam, and the former athlete and Stadium Committee member, Krishna Shenoy, accompanied Mr. Rajuvelu.
District athletic coach Vasanthkumar said hard surface could lead to discomfort for athletes and they may complain of pain in their legs.
Over a 100 athletes use the stadium for their regular practice. The include Uma Bhagyalkshmia (800 m runner), sprinter Vikas Puthran, Akash B. Rao (jumper), Varsha (triathlete) and Shreema Priyadarshini (heptathlete).
Mr. Vasanthkumar said the dust from cinder track was another health hazard for both athletes and hundreds of people who visit the stadium in the morning and evening for their daily walk.

If you have made plans to visit Mangalore this weekend, either put them on hold or reach the coastal town well before Friday 8 pm. Reason : five stabbings reported from various parts of the taluk since Monday night have forced the Dakshina Kannada administration to order all shops and business establishments to shut by 8 pm. The administration will review its order on Saturday.
On Wednesday night, two youths were stabbed at A B Shetty Circle.
Deputy commissioner C V Ponnuraj told reporters on Thursday that despite efforts by community leaders to maintain the delicate balance in the district, some elements are trying to create trouble. The administration has taken into consideration a request made by the IGP (Western Range) and SP to close down shops by 8 pm so that people can reach home early, he said.
The order will apply to bars and restaurants, cinemas and malls, Ponnuraj said. Public transport has been kept out of the purview of the order.
Admitting that this will cause some inconvenience to people in view of the Ganesha festival on Sunday, the DC said: Let people finish their festival purchases in advance.
IGP Gopal B Hosur said perverted elements have been busy over the past few weeks trying to foment communal tension through desecration of religious places. They have followed this up with acts of assault. Early closure of businesses will ensure that roads are clear and not give miscreants chance to melt in the crowd.
More than 30 police patrol vehicles are operating in Mangalore city alone, the IGP said, adding that nakabandi has been strengthened to deny miscreants a free run. In addition , the DC, on our request, has appointed executive magistrates in 14 police station limits in Mangalore and Bantwal taluks, deemed to be communally sensitive, to help the police deal with any sort of law-and-order exigency, Hosur said.
Police superintendent A S Rao said while no arrests have been made in connection with the incidents of assault, the line of investigation is clear in some cases; the police hope to make a breakthrough soon.
The district administration has issued notices to S V S College , Bantwal and Government First Grade College , Uppinangady, to explain their stand on the controversial ban on burqas in the campuses. Once the district administration receives the reports , it will await the decision of the state government and the Department of Collegiate Education. The administration, based on representations from aggrieved students represented the issue to DC V Ponnuraj, who in turn issued notices to the institutions to explain their stand. Observing that neither Mangalore University to which these institutions S V S College, Bantwal and Government First Grade College, Uppinangady are affiliated to, nor the administration has any powers per se to intervene in the issue, Ponnuraj said: We will go through their replies and send it to the state government , who can then take a decision on it. The University has delegated all disciplinary powers to the colleges, he said.
The institutions, the DC asserted, should tell the students beforehand about the terms and conditions governing their admission. The aim of issuing the notices is to find out under what provisions have they taken a decision to deny students like Aysha Asmin at Bantwal and others in Uppinangady from wearing a headscarf, he said. The government must take a call on this sensitive issue that is more social in nature. Not conceding that this was a socio-political issue in light of suggestions that groups from two major communities were keeping the issue alive, Ponnuraj reiterated that it is more social in nature. It is for society to collectively decide on such issues rather than for groups to dictate terms, he said adding that if managements of the two institutions apprehend danger from these groups, they can turn to the police for help. The question of faith should be left to individuals, and not become a subject matter of some rules and regulations, the DC said.

It was Curfew Like atmosphere in mangalore after 8 PM today.For maintaining the law and order situation and to avoid recurrence of untoward incidents, the Dakshina Kannada district administration, in consultation with the police department, has decided to order closure of the business establishments by 8 pm in the city as well as some sensitive areas in the district, for the next 48 hours, said deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj at a press meet held here on Thursday, August 20. This order will be effective on Friday and Saturday.
Some of the unsavoury incidents had been precipitated by some vested interests in the city. These incidents have shown signs of damaging the peaceful atmosphere of the district, he said, stressing that the orders are being issued as a preventive measure against the recurrence of such incidents. He hoped that the people will extend full cooperation to the concerned authorities by adhering to the orders, he said.
“The order will cover all the business establishments, but the transport system will remain unaffected by the order,” he clarified.
Gopal Hosur, inspector general of police, western range, said that the policemen will be patrolling the areas, duly reinforced with additional forces. The patrolling will be conducted with the help of more than 30 vehicles, with the help of Karnataka State Reserve police that has already arrived, and an additional 300 policemen, who will be coming from out side the state and are expected to arrive here shortly. “At the same time, we have sent a request to the senior police officers in the state, to deploy Central Reserve police,” he revealed.
“We are going to implement strict measures to prevent any form of violence from taking place,” Hosur said, adding that innocents are being targetted by the miscreants. The deputy commissioner would be appointing an executive magistrate to take preventive measures as and when needed, he said.
He also felt that the incidents that have occurred in the city, were the handiwork of some vested interests, which are working to disturb the social fabric of the region, as part of their larger conspiracy. He said that the police department is trying to provide security to the common people and exhorted all the organizations to join hands with the administration and the policemen, in maintaining peace as well as to eradicate the social evils that are responsible for such incidents.
As the city has become notorious because of the past incidents of communal violence and disturbances, the developments that take place here are being closely monitored by the national media. Twenty six year-old all-rounder Bharat Chipli, a veteran Karnataka Ranji player, and a member of Royal Challengers twenty-20 team, has been selected as the captain of the Mangalore team for Karnataka Premier League.
Chipli is not only a good batsman, but also a useful medium pacer. He has played 15 first class matches and scored 847 runs so far. He also has appeared in twenty-20 matches thrice.
The management is yet to name the team. It is learnt, that the name, 'Mangalore United' or 'Mangalore Tigers' might get the final nod. Mangalore team owner Moidin Bava informed that the 14 players to be finalized during the selection process would be trained by Team Mangalore itself. The process of selecting local talents has begun from Monday onwards and about 2,000 applications have been received from the aspirants. The process of issuing prescribed format for joining the team would be taken up at Nehru Maidan in the city from today, and the process will continue on Wednesday too. Out of the applicants, 50 best players would be hand-picked and on Friday and Saturday, four teams made from these players, will play one another at NIT-K ground, Suratkal. Out of these matches, 14 players would be selected, and the team of these 14 players would play a match with the 14 players, who were bought through the bid process at Bangalore. Those who excel in this match will get a place in the final team. Like reality shows, all the players of the team would be taken through the streets of the city in a procession after the final selection, Bawa explained.
Bawa also disclosed that there is a likelihood of picking a player from outside the state, who has presently settled in the city, for the local team and that the final team of 14 will have two local talents.

Famous Bollywood Director Rakesh Roshan paid a surprise visit to Mangalore early this week. He was accompanied by Mumbai based Mangalorean physician Dr. B. U. Pai, who happens to his close friend. The purpose of his visit was to pay a visit to Sri Satyadevata Temple at Gurpur.
Though this was meant to be a quiet and private visit, he took time off to watch a movie at the Big Cinemas multiplex in Bharath Mall and also stopped by at Pallkhi Restaurant at Balmatta to get a taste of Chicken Ghee Roast and Kane Masala Fry, two Mangalorean delicacies which he had heard much of.
The film-star turned director of blockbuster Hindi movies like Kaho Na Pyar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya and Krissh is the father of Bollywood heart throb Hritik Roshan. All his movies typically begin with the letter ‘K’ as he considers that to be his lucky alphabet.
After relishing the local delicacies - he especially loved Kane fry and asked for more – he went out his way to shower compliments on the chefs of the restaurant and expressed his desire to revisit this city. Hopefully, next time he will be accompanied by his handsome hunk of a son Hritik.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj has issued an order to all private colleges in the district to quarantine incoming foreign students for a week after seven outstation students in the city were found to be infected with the A(H1N1) virus.
“Whoever comes from abroad, whether they have symptoms or not, will have to be quarantined for a week,” he said and added that compliance with the order would be monitored by a special team.
Speaking at a special review meeting held here on Thursday, Mr. Ponnuraj said that the order would be despatched by his office on Friday and colleges would be expected to follow the guidelines from Saturday.
Expressing disappointment with the low turnout of representatives from private medical and engineering colleges at the meeting, he said, “They seem to be least concerned about the task on hand. They are only interested in making money and have displayed a total lack of social commitment through their absence.”
Reacting to a college representative’s plea that a very short notice had been given by the district administration about Thursday’s meeting, he said, “At least we gave you notice, but the virus will not give you prior notice. This is an emergency and we expect everybody to react accordingly.” He directed his staff to issue show-cause notices to the managements of colleges that skipped the meeting.
Mr. Ponnuraj said that Mumbai and Pune were a potential secondary source for the spread of the virus into the district. “We need to start screening passengers on domestic flights as well,” he said and directed health officials to launch public awareness programmes at bus stops and railway stations.
Stating that a special A(H1N1) helpline would be set up soon, he said, “People can call this helpline for questions and to inform us about suspected cases.”

The new integrated terminal building of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Kenjar here is expected to be ready by September-end. At present, the terminal building is at Bajpe.
The AAI has adopted a roof-water harvesting system in the new building to collect 60 lakh litres of rain water. In addition, a facility has been created for sewage treatment. The treated water will be used for gardening.
When Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, reviewed the progress of work on the terminal building at Kenjar on Thursday, officials told him that the entire work would be completed by September-end. Once the new terminal building is ready, the distance between the city and the airport will be reduced by about 8 km. The terminal building at Bajpe is about 22 km from the city.
Mr. Kateel told the officials that if they could get the work completed by September-end, he would pursue matters related to commissioning of the building with the Civil Aviation Ministry.
J.T. Radhakrishna, Deputy General Manager (Civil), and N. Prem Prasad, Deputy General Manager (Electrical), apprised Mr. Kateel of the progress of work on the building. The new director of the airport, V.N. Chandran, was present.
Mr. Radhakrishna told Mr. Kateel that the roof of the building had been completed and the basement was ready. Only interior ceiling work on the ground and first floor (mezzanine floor) and some work related to air-conditioning were pending. Seven escalators had been installed in the building.
The building would have 22 check-in counters. It would have three conveyor belts at the arrival section, he said.
The car parking facility to accommodate 300 cars at a time was ready.
In addition, the apron (parking facility for aircraft) was also ready. The apron, covering about 48,000 sq. m, was sufficient to park five aircraft at a time. Four Airbus 310, and one Airbus 321, could be parked at a time. The link taxiway to the main runway was also ready, Mr. Radhakrishna told the MP.

A major fire broke out in a multi-storeyed Building trade centre in the heart of the city, Fire brigade and other officials managed to evacuate over 150 persons trapped inside. Eleven fire department personnel suffered major and minor injuries during the rescuing operation. They have been admitted to hospital.
