The department of forensic medicine and toxicology, Yenepoya Medical College, here will organize a one-day workshop in forensic anthropology on Wednesday.
Dr Ruma Purkait, from the department of anthropology, Saugor University, Madhya Pradesh, an expert in anthropology will be the chief resource person. While anthropology is the study of the physical characteristics of the human body, forensic anthropology is the application of the science of anthropology (the study of the human body and skeleton) in a legal setting, most often in criminal cases where the victim's remains are in the advanced stages of decomposition.
A forensic anthropologist can also assist in the identification of deceased individuals whose remains are decomposed, burned, mutilated or otherwise unrecognizable. This workshop aims to bridge the gap between the knowledge and skill components of forensic anthropology and to update postgraduates and practitioners of forensic medicine.
