KMC Hospitals is organizing a series of events as part of the World Heart Day 2009 in a bid to create public awareness about the heart and its importance in human lives. This includes the World Heart Day run, a month long heart screening camp, display of hoardings and banners in and around the city with messages about the event and a drawing competition for children, said Sunil Deshpande, COO of KMC Hospitals.
Dr Deshpande told reporters here on Thursday that elected representatives, officials, and senior level management staff of Manipal University would take part on the World Heart Day run to be held on September 27. The run begins from KMC Bejai and ends at KMC Hospital at Ambedkar Circle. This event that is being organized for the last four years has been drawing people in excess of 3,000 each year and the number is growing, he said.
International athlete and Arjuna awardee Vandana Rao will lead the run, which will pass through Lalbagh, M G Road, P V S Circle, Bunts Hostel Circle. Attractive T-shirts will be issued to people participating in the run on a first-come-first served basis, he said. In a bid to encourage the participants, special prizes will be given to the best placard, best institution, corporation participation, youngest, eldest participant, and so on.
Padmanabh Kamath, senior interventional cardiologist said the hospital is offering a complete heart-screening package for Rs 777, a discount of around 40 per cent in connection with World Heart Day celebration. The hospital will perform further treatments such as angiogram, angioplasty and other procedures for patients needing them at a discounted price, he said. Mahendra Mairal, cardio thoracic surgeon was present.
