The first flight carrying Haj pilgrims to King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will take off from Mangalore airport on October 25, said Minister for Haj, Wakfs and Minority Welfare D. Mumtaz Ali Khan.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday after attending a meeting in this regard, the Minister said that 700 pilgrims would travel from here through the Haj committee.
In all, six flights, one each day, had been scheduled up to October 30, he said adding that a transit camp for pilgrims would be opened at Bajpe on October 23.
The Minister said that residents from other communities should come forward to support the pilgrims either by extending financial assistance or volunteering at the transit camp as it was a question of humanity.
He said that 6,000 pilgrims will travel for the Haj pilgrimage from the State this year through the Haj committee.
The Minister also urged the people of the district to refrain from engaging in communal violence. As Mangalore was hosting Haj pilgrims for the first time, it should be an occasion for Hindus and Muslims to bury their differences, if any.
District in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar said that the State Government had given a subsidy of Rs. 18,000 to each pilgrim for the pilgrimage. He said that if there is any shortage of funds, the Ullal Dargah Committee can divert some funds from the Rs. 1 crore released to it by the State Government.
Karnataka State government is encouraging Haj travelers and helps them in providing necessary requirements. This time nearly 700 people visiting Hazz by Bajpe International Airport, totally six flights are carrying Haj travelers from Mangalore, by Calicut to Madeena airport, he added.
BA Mohiddin, Former In Charge Minister, Karnataka, wished the Haj visitors and thanked the government for giving the opportunity to fly from Mangalore.
President of the State Haj Committee Mohammed Ghouse and secretary of the State Minorities Department Mohamed Sanaulla Saleem, Dr Thahid, Y Mohemmed Kunhi, Administrator YSH and Yogish Bhatt, MLA Mangalore were present.
