The Prison Ministry of India (PMI)—Mangalore Unit celebrated its ten years of establishment at Mangalore. The members of the unit thanked God through the Solemn Eucharistic celebration held at Infant Jesus Shrine Mangalore, which was presided over by the PRO of Mangalore diocese, Fr. William Menezes. Fr. Wilfred Rodrigues OCD delivered homily.
Fr. Rodrigues, reflecting on the message of Jesus said that our service to the inmates of the prison is the image of Jesus to them. He appealed to the members to continue the good work so that our mission may open the eyes of those who look down upon the prisoners, to give them due respect.
This was followed by the get-together of the members and guests. Gretta Miranda welcomed the gathering. Sr.Noel SRA and Sr. Deepa SRA performed the prayer dance. The Karnataka State co-ordinator of PMI Ida D’Cunha was the chief guest and the PRO of Mangalore Diocese Fr. William Menezes,was the president of the meet.
Ida D’cunha appreciated the service of the unit and appealed the members to conduct awareness programme relating to the ministry at parish and diocese level.
The Principal of Roshini Nilaya,Mangalore Sr. Jacinta DHM speaking on the occasion called upon the members to build confidence and self-esteem in the inmates of the prison. Fr. Menezes and Fr. Rodrigues also spoke on this occasion.
The Superior of St. Joseph’s Monastery Mangalore, Fr. George Santhumayor OCD, Fr. Wilfred Rodrigues OCD and Fr. Boniface D’souza OCD were the other dignatories on the dais.
The Secretary of the unit Sr.Daphne SRA presented the report of the activities. Mrs. Jane Sequeira compeered the meet while the coordinator of the unit, Fr. Walter D’souza OCD thanked the members for their support. The past coordinators of the unit, Fr. William Miranda, Provincial Councilor OCD and members were present for the meet.
It is recalled that the Mangalore diocese unit of the Prison Ministry of India was officially inaugurated on 27 September 1999 at the hands of the Bishop of Mangalore, Bishop Aloysius Paul D’souza at Bishop’s House Mangalore. Fr. Wilfred Rodrigues OCD was nominated as its first coordinator. Fr. John Alex Pinto OCD, Fr. Lancy Lewis OCD and Fr. Boniface D’souza OCD served the unit as coordinators during these years. Presently Fr. Walter D’souza is the Unit coordinator.
