Government urged to drop diversion plan

24 September 2009

A public consultation meeting, convened by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) at Circuit House, Mangalore on Tuesday 22nd September 2009. A memorandum was submitted to drop the Government’s proposal to divert the Netravati flow project.

Large numbers of NGO’s, Institutional Heads, public representatives, religious leaders and political party member’s stated the project was an “unscientific and ecologically and environmentally destructive project.” They urged the Government to drop the project.

Farmers, fishermen, and the urban people in Dakshina Kannada would face shortage of water, if the project was implemented. It would also come in the way of their livelihood.

In a resolution, the participants wondered how the Government could initiate the project when it knew that the project area came under the jurisdiction of Kudremukh National Park. According to the Wildlife Protection Act, no development project could be taken up in the jurisdiction of a national park. In such a condition, the meeting wanted to know how the Government could construct mini-reservoirs and dig channels in the Western Ghats region to divert the Netravati.

It regretted that the Government was initiating the project while being aware that the Western Ghats was among the 18 bio-diversity hotspots in the world.

The meeting decided to take a delegation, comprising people from all segments of the district to Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa, and urge him to drop the project. It also decided that the people should not hesitate to file public interest litigation in the Karnataka High Court, if the Government took up the project.
