Yuvraj singh launches Mangalore United

06 September 2009

Move aside Manchester United, Mangalore United are here. In a casting coup of sorts, none other than one of the worlds leading T20 exponents, Yuvraj Singh, launched the Mangalore franchise here on Friday evening.

In Bangalore to play the BCCI Corporate Trophy, Yuvraj was persuaded by good friend and former Indian Airlines teammate, Fazal Khaleel, the assistant coach of Mangalore United , to grace the function at the Palace grounds.

Lauding the initiative of the Karnatata State Cricket Association , Yuvraj termed it a good opportunity for the local players. I am a big fan of Manchester United and now I will support Mangalore United, he quipped.

Also present on stage alongside Yuvraj was former India player Ajay Jadeja and television personality Charu Sharma. Money is not what these players need, what they require is your presence at the ground in large numbers. There is no fun in playing to an empty stadium, Jadeja told the audience that included luminaries such as GR Viswanath and Brijesh Patel as also a host of political figures.

Team owner Mohiuddin Bawa of Fiza Developers, who took centre stage first, lamented the absence of proper cricketing facilities in Mangalore but promised to do all he could to develop the game in the region.

The evening got off to a bright start with a fusion performance , which was followed by the parading of the team members as also a catwalk by brand ambassador Sindhu, a cine actor. Karnataka batsman Bharat Chipli is to lead the side which will be coached by K Sanath Kumar, a former Karnataka medium pacer.

Mangalore United play their first match on the opening day of the KPL, Sept 9, against Bangalore Rural.
