05 September 2009

If you have a liking for paintings and your vehicle’s fuel tank is empty, a visit to the Indian Oil Corporation petrol outlet at Mallikatte can be a rejuvenating experience.

From Tuesday, the petrol outlet set up a permanent art gallery showcasing the works of some of the best known artists from the region such as P.S. Punchithaya of Kasaragod, Ganesh Somayaji, Kundan G., Rajendra Kedage, Anil Devadiga, Permude Mohan Kumar, Dinesh Holla and N.S. Pattar. A few indoor sculptures and terracotta products such as beer mugs and pen stands are added attractions, some of which are priced at a mere Rs. 30.

There was good news for the artists by the afternoon, as visitors to the gallery, called “Art Insight”, had purchased two paintings for Rs. 21,000 and Rs. 7,500.

The gallery has been put up by entrepreneur Karunakar M.H. who said 30 per cent of the proceeds would go to the gallery.
